The Loyola Marymount Men’s Lacrosse team kicked off its season on February 12 in winning fashion as they dispatched San Diego State University with a 9-3 rout.

LMU dominated early and often as they consistently got to the ground balls first, creating more opportunities for the offense and taking pressure off the defense. Not only did they race to get the ground balls, they utilized the extra possessions by shooting often. The defense pushed out the whole game and forced SDSU to turn the ball over consistently. Also, because the LMU defense avoided confusion, it allowed them to play aggressive the whole game.

It was a gratifying win for the Lions, who are guided by three coaches experiencing their first year with the program. Head coach Craig Hochstadt, defensive coordinator Mike Gvozen and assistant coach Peter Dante bring several years of expertise to the job as each played NCAA D-1 lax at Maryland (Hochstadt), John Hopkins (Gvozen) and Hofstra (Dante).

LMU will look to continue its success throughout the year. 14 of its games are played within 30 miles of Los Angeles – 11 of which are played at home.
