The 2011 Torrey Pines season can be best described as the “season of change”. An underclassmen laden roster and a brand new coaching staff are slowly but surely beginning to come together and are getting better with each new day. Jono Zissi (a former Tufts Univ Attackman and Assistant Coach of 2010 National Championship Tufts team) has taken over the reigns of a young, yet talented and athletic Falcon team. The new coaching staff has brought new offensive and defensive game plans with them, but more importantly, they have begun to lay the ground work for a new culture. This years team has already completed three different community service projects and participated in “The Program,” a leadership development camp. As with any change, there have been some growing pains, but at 8-2 and with a win over the top ranked team in California under their belt, Zissi thinks this young group, has taken a step forward, if only a small one. “Our goal is to continue to get better every day, and build for May.” As the group continues to get familiar with one another and with the new goals, attitudes, and standards, the schedule doesnt let up. Torrey Pines will travel to San Francisco to play San Ramon Valley and St. Ignatius, before returning home for games with local powers La Costa Canyon and Poway. In their upset win over Coronado, the Falcons were able to win the ground ball battle and were able to have good, long possessions limiting the amount of defense they had to play, two things that Zissi felt were missing in their losses. Torrey Pines received balanced scoring, with Sean Doyle (Cornell), John Wilson, Andrew Perkins and Kevin Hurt leading the charge.
