TRILOGY FOUR — LaxRatz asks former NCAA Defenseman of the Year for Cornell University, Mitch Belisle, about the growth of lacrosse to the West Coast. Lacrosse is a dominant fixture in the Northeast, but still very new to the West Coast. However, an influx of east coast-bred laxers relocating to places such as California and Colorado and desire for a “fresh” sport combined with places that traditionally are full of talented athletes and wealth, lax figures to quickly gain ground.

“I was thrilled to bring 3d Lacrosse to Southern California to put on the inaugural SoCal box immersion camp. The camp was a huge success. The boys who participated had fun while improving their game. Jamie Munro, Dave Jenkins and Sean Allen are three excellent coaches with a passion for teaching young men. I’m excited to see my Mustangs teams implement the skills they learned at the 3d camp in our L.A. Box Lacrosse league this fall in Torrance!”

Finland to Host 2012 U19 World Lacrosse Championship

Posted by Strider Agostinelli On September - 16 - 2011 Comments Off
The Finnish medieval city of Turku has been chosen as the location for the upcoming Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) U19 World Championship. The upcoming world games will be played by thirteen nations, including the 2008 FIL world champ USA team on July 12-21, 2012.
Turku is in the southwest coast of Finland and holds an impressive record of hosting huge international sporting events like the U18 Soccer World Cup and the Ice Hockey World Championship. The forthcoming U19 tournament is so far the biggest lacrosse event that the city will have hosted.
The host city is currently making its great preparations for the U19 World Championships, which will be held in several venues that include the Yläkenttä, Kupittaa Sports Park which now possesses three trufs and nine grass fields. The organizers will add two fields by the time the 2012 Chapionship takes place.
In addition to hosting the upcoming World Lacrosse Championships, Finland is preparing its national team for competing in the game itself. In fact, last August 2010 saw the first evaluation camp in the country that aimed to take a look at potential players for 2012. It was screened by Coach Risto Worthington himself and 26 youngsters were selected from among the numerous participants. The following months will be the tryouts for the U19 Finnish national team. According to reports, the tryouts will expect some fifty or more hopefuls coming from the different regions of the country.
The Finnish U19 team ranked an unfortunate last post in the previous 2008 World Games, leaving the team more fierce and determined to make everything right this time. Then again, the Finnish are just up to be included in the top 8, since the contending teams include the best lacrosse players in the US, Canada, Iroquois, Australia, England, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Bermuda. The Finnish national team admittedly cite that competing in the Finals of the upcoming Championships will take a lot of hard work and intensive training for the players.
Prior to last year’s August evaluation camp, Coach Worthington asserts that the Finnish National Team want victory to be theirs this time. But before they can achieve that, they need to be determined and make numerous sacrifices. “The players will have to sacrifice time with friends to work out, sacrifice weekends and festivals for practice, sacrifice time watching TV to pick up their stick to throw against a wall,” said Worthington in one of his 2010 interviews.
The Finnish team is comprised of promising and motivated players like Mikko Varjo and John Snellman. The players were also representatives in the 2008 European Championships in Lahti, Finland. The Finnish national men’s team will likewise send out some of its players to the European Championships in Amsterdam.
Aside from having potential players, the Finns are seen to be very competitive on the European level. It is comprised of various goalkeepers, especially in the Finnish national ice-hockey team. But the scenario is very different in Lacrosse; the U19 Lacrosse team only possesses two goalies in the player pool.
Meanwhile, the first half of the tryouts will be gathering from July 15 to July 17. It will be graced by Finnish Lacrosse coaches like Risto Worthington, Grif, Barhight, Kevin Boland and Pentti Pekkonen. The second half of tryouts will be this autumn. From an array of numerous hopefuls, only 23 players will be included in the U19 national team for the World Championships.
It is the first time that the U19 World Championships will be held in Europe. Finnish organizers have made access to the main games free at the two sporting venues.

The 2008 Men’s U19 world champs are getting their gears ready for the upcoming leg of the Men’s U19 World Championship next year. The tournament will be vied by thirteen Lacrosse nations in Turku, Finland July 12-21, 2012.
Just recently, the US team has started their preparations by appointing Coach Tim Flynn to lead the pool of players in defending their title in the Finnish city. Flynn was chosen by the Us Lacrosse team from the array of hopeful candidates becaues of his remarkable history in coaching as well as his impressive contribution to the country’s Lacrosse team.
Coach Flynn saw the appointment as an honor to lead the U19 men’s players. This was what he said during one of the interviews for the upcoming world games: “The experience of being an assistant coach on the 2008 gold medal team provided both great excitement and true education. I am looking forward to the challenge of helping to defend our world championship in Finland in 2012.”
Following Coach Flynn’s appointment was the US Lacrosse team’s announcement of the 23-man roster list of players for the 2012 event. The announcement was made after the four-day intensive U19 tryouts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County last July 7-10. The event was attended by more than one hundred young hopefuls.
The tryouts resulted in the selection of 21 officials and 23 players coming from fifteen different states. Among the selected players were Midfielder Ryan Tucker and goalie Kyle Turri. Mike Hyland, Peter Buchanan and Chris Clark were chosen to officiate during the World Championships.
During another interview, Coach Flynn admitted that the tryouts had seen several potential players. But the 23 chosen players outshined the rest in their possession of both “diversity and talent” for Lacrosse. In addition to the pools of players, coaches and evaluators were selected to finish the US team’s line-up in defending the gold medal next summer.
The thirteen regions team USA will be competing with are the following: Canada, Iroquois, Australia, England, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Finland and Bermuda.
The US team defeated Canada last 2008 FIL U19 World Championship, held in Coquitlam, B.C., with a score of 19-12. The US team is under the supervision of US Lacrosse, a national governing body for lacrosse, and the head organizer of both US national teams for men and women.
