Getting Recruited
Complete the College Questionnaire
Using your computer, go to as many college lacrosse program websites as possible and request a questionnaire. Some programs will send them to you via 'snail mail' while others will have you fill the questionnaire out online.
**Taking this step automatically puts athletes in a college lacrosse program's database.
Your freshman year of high school through your senior year are the most important years for a future college lacrosse player. It is recommended that you make as many all-star teams as your league, county, or state has to offer. This is easier in some states than others. for example, New York holds the Empire State Games annually. To make the lacrosse team for one of your state's All-Star teams is a huge honor and every coach in the country will know who you are from then on.
If you play lacrosse in a non-traditional area then we recommend playing lacrosse for an all-star traveling team and playing in some of the nation's best summer and fall tournaments. It is not uncommon for college coaches to find their future players at camps and tournaments.
Relationship Management: July 1st & Prior
A coach cannot contact a high school athlete until July 1st heading into his/her senior year. For this reason, we encourage you, your family, and your high school coaches to send college coaches the occasional friendly e-mail expressing your interest in their college lacrosse program.
Underclassmen are allowed to call coaches and talk to them. This is a must. Calling shows added initative on your part. You can expect coaches to respect your attentiveness to the recruiting process as well as give you honest feedback as they progress recruiting your class.
***If you are fortunate enough to know a college coach is interested in you, begin building on that relationship now.
College coaches and admissions counselors work closely together evaluating academic standing. They need to know whether grades and pertinent national tests (SAT, ACT) meet the college's admissions requirements. Exceptions for a select few high school recruits on a coach's 'A-list' can be made. However, coaches and admissions counselors prefer athletes that work hard on the lacrosse field and in the classroom. Good grades make life easier for all involved and increase the likelihood of any lacrosse recruit being accepted.
The lacrosse world is surprisingly small. This means that once you've garnered the attention of one or two coaches, there are probably more out there that know more about you than you think. Therefore, when you hit the field always play with character and dignity. You never know when a college coach or someone connected to the nation's best DIII, DII, or DI programs is watching.
Get the Attention of College Coaches
Attend camps and summer tournaments where you know college coaches are going to attend. You need to put yourself in situations where you are competing with/against the nation's best high school talent. Then coaches will gauge your potential level of play (NCLL, DIII, DII, DI). The more you play, the better you get and the more often you will be seen by recruiters.
Recruiting also requires that you initiate contact with college coaches. Though they cannot call you until July 1 going into your senior year of high school, you can call them and/or visit their camps to have a conversation about your interest in their school.
Last, we recommend lacrosse players mail (or email) coaches newspaper clippings, articles, and highlight videos that pertain to him/her. A LaxRatz membership is perfect for this as you can put all of this into your player profile.

Bennett Jonas: San Clemente High School, Ca
The steps of the recruitment process for lacrosse athletes can be a daunting task. Mention that you are from California and eyebrows will start to rise. It's easily thought, "Aren't the only programs in California club programs or select private schools?" Then there is the thought of talent. "The skill in California has to be light years behind East Coast lax, right?" Ten years ago these were common questions. Today, they are ill-informed assumptions that can cause a college program to miss out on legitimate lacrosse talent.

LaxRatz Staff
At LaxRatz, our goal is to get lacrosse players into the best academic institutes in the country, and to aid coaches in their pursuit of athletes that fit their team's ethos. The college lacrosse experience is only four years long, and neither the athlete nor the coach can afford to make the wrong decision. Thus, while we desire for everyone to attain all this great sport has to offer (All-American, National Championships, Team-USA), we understand it is the combination of athlete and college/team culture that provides for success. Success, in this case, is a great bachelor's degree and a winning lacrosse experience for coach and player.
Our integrity lies in giving lacrosse players and college coaches honest assessments of players' ability. There will be no beating around the bush, neither over-promising and under-providing nor sensationalizing you as an athlete. If you have the goods to play at the highest level, we will tell you. The same goes if we think you are a DIII, DII, or Club candidate. Further, if you are an exceptional academic student with the ability to be part of a team, we will encourage coaches to take you as a recruited walk-on. Unbeknownst to many, coaches at top-tier schools will take student-athletes who can infuse their program with a healthy respect for academic integrity and character.
